The victim, a second-year PGT doctor specializing in respiratory medicine, was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital after a grueling 36-hour shift. Her body was found by fellow interns and postgraduate trainees the next morning, with her laptop, notebook, and cellphone lying intact beside her.Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the next day based on an initial investigation by the Kolkata Police. The Calcutta High Court later handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday.

Supreme Court Intervention and Demands for Justice
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the case on August 20, 2024, setting up a National Task Force to recommend measures to improve safety and prevent violence against healthcare professionals. The CBI has taken over the investigation, and the accused, Sanjay Roy, has been escorted to the Sealdah court under heavy security. Roy agreed to undergo a polygraph test, stating his innocence.
