India Signed 10-Year Deal with Iran over Chabahar Port

NEW DELHI, May 13 – India signed a 10-year contract with Iran on Monday to develop and operate the Iranian port of Chabahar, the Narendra Modi-led government said, strengthening relations with a strategic Middle Eastern nation.

  • What will be the benefit to India?
    – India’s contract with Iran over the Chabahar Port will increase the trade by giving direct access to Central Asia, Afghanistan, and beyond. Thus, the dependency on the traditional routes will be reduced and the economic integration in the region will be enhanced.
  • Will it provide a new way to East?
    – Yes, the Chabahar Port agreement presents India with another trade route to the East, bypassing Pakistan and offering a strategic gateway to Central Asia, Afghanistan and so on.
  • Will this affect the relationship with Israel and the US?
    – The Chabahar Port deal might damage the India-US relations because of the sanctions on Iran, but it is unlikely to significantly affect the India-Israel relations, as India has diplomatic relations with both countries.
  • Will the US impose any sanctions on India?
    – Although India may encounter problems in dealing with the US sanctions on Iran, the Chabahar Port agreement is of utmost importance for India’s strategic interests and economic growth, thus, diplomatic negotiations will be made to ease any sanctions.
  • What is the significance of this in the fight against China?
    – The Chabahar Port agreement facilitates India to challenge China’s power by diversifying trade routes, improving regional connectivity, and becoming a leading player in Central Asian trade, thus, reducing the dependence on China-dominated corridors like the CPEC and Gwadar port.
