Seeking Justice Amidst Protests and Political Turmoil

The Horrific Incident and Initial Investigations
The victim, a second-year PGT doctor specializing in respiratory medicine, was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital after a grueling 36-hour shift. Her body was found by fellow interns and postgraduate trainees the next morning, with her laptop, notebook, and cellphone lying intact beside her.Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the next day based on an initial investigation by the Kolkata Police. The Calcutta High Court later handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday.
Protests, Vandalism, and Political Blame Game
The incident led to nationwide protests by doctors, nursing staff, and others, demanding justice for the victim and a central law to ensure the safety of healthcare personnel. Protests at RG Kar Hospital soon spilled onto the streets, with people from all sections joining in.
The situation was further aggravated by the state administration’s handling of the case. The striking doctors and students demanded the resignation of the principal of RG Kar Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who was later appointed head of another medical college in Kolkata, stoking public anger.Fake news and misinformation, including unverified conspiracy theories about the crime, went viral on social media, influencing an incensed public. The BJP, which is in opposition in West Bengal, has been trying to use the incident to dismiss the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state. The TMC, on the other hand, has accused the BJP and the Communist Party of India-Marxists (CPI-M) of infiltrating the protests and orchestrating violence.

Current Status and Ongoing Investigations
The CBI has taken over the investigation, and the accused, Sanjay Roy, has been escorted to the Sealdah court under heavy security. Roy agreed to undergo a polygraph test, stating his innocence.
